Recognizing the critical role of resource management in environmental and agricultural sustainability, Biliran-Leyte del Norte—Leyte del Sur IMO (BLNLSIMO) spearheaded a Convergence Forum on Sand Mining for Leyte and Southern Leyte Stakeholders on March 11-12, 2024, respectively, at the NIA Regional Office Training Center, Marasbaras, Tacloban City.
Bringing together Local Government Units (LGUs), Irrigators Associations (IAs), Provincial Agricultural and Fisheries Council (PAFC), and key agencies including Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO), Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB), Environmental Management Bureau (EMB), and National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA), the forum fostered discussions on the long-term impact of sand mining on irrigation systems, farmlands, and natural ecosystems. Stakeholders emphasized the need for strict regulatory measures, sustainable extraction practices, and strengthened collaboration to protect vital resources.
The forum concluded on a positive and unified note, with agencies and stakeholders renewing their commitment to responsible resource management. This collective effort highlights the importance of sustainability in securing agricultural productivity and ecological balance for future generations.
